 DAY 475

A man went into a bank with exactly $1,000, all in one-dollar bills. He gave the money to a cashier and said, "Put this money into ten bags in such a way that if I call and ask for a certain number of dollars, you can hand me over one or more bags, giving me the exact amount called for, without having to open any of the bags."

How was the cashier to do this?

Answer:

The contents of the bags should be $1, $2, $4, $8, $16, $32, $64, $128, $256, and $489. Notice how the contents of the first nine bags are in geometric progression.

DAY 470

Using multiplication and addition, make the digits 1-9 = 100. Each number may be used only once.

Answer:

9 X 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 100

DAY 469

Subtract 45 from 45, leaving 45.

Answer:

1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 =45

  9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1 = 45
- 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = 45
  8+6+4+1+9+7+5+3+2 = 45

DAY 466  MIND TICKLER

From Dell Penny Press Variety Puzzles
February, 2019

Find the missing number (?) and the next two numbers in the sequence:

5, 8, 13, 12, 7, 10, ?, 9 ........

Answer:

The missing number is 8. Starting from the third number, each number is equal to the sum of the digits of the previous two numbers. For example,  5+8=13,  8+1+3=12,  etc.

The next number would be 17 (8+9), followed by 17 again (9+1+7).
