There are four farmers named Able, Baker, Charlie, and Dog who live up a dirt road leading off the highway. They are located 1, 2, 3, and 4 miles, respectively, from the highway.

The county offers to pave the road up to Dog's place if the farmers will pay the cost of it, which the county reckons to to be $4800. So the boys get together at the local cafe where Dog proposes that they each pay a quarter of the cost. The others know that he's a sly old Dog, and they're skeptical. Abel, Baker, and Charlie never use the road to go beyond their own farms.

Is Dog's solution fair? Is there another way to distribute the cost that is more favorable to Abel, Baker, and Charlie, but is still fair?

Answer:

Think of the road as four sections, each one mile long, each costing $1200. Consider the road from the highway up to Abel. All four of them will use it, so they should each pay a quarter the cost of that mile, or $300 each. But the second mile is only used by Baker, Charlie, and Dog, so they should pay $400 each toward the second mile. Similarly, Charlie and Dog should pay $600 toward the third mile, and Dog should pay $1,200 for the last mile.

Thus Abel pays $300, Baker $700, Charlie $1,300, and Dog $2, 500.

NOTE: Not everyone would agree with this solution. In fact, Dog is threatening to pull out of the deal. He says he'll wait until the road gets to Charlie's, and then he'll only have to pay $1,200 for the last mile.

Two cars depart from the same spot for the same destination. One travels at 60 miles per hour, and the other at 65 miles per hour. The faster car arrives at the destination one hour before the slower one. How far did they travel?

Answer:

780 miles.........The faster car gains five miles on the slower one each hour. Since the slower car is traveling at 60 mph, or one mile per minute, it takes the slower car five minutes to make up this distance. So the faster car gains five minutes on the slower car for every hour it travels. To gain an hour, it must travel 12 hours (60 = 5 X 12). 65 X 12 = 780.

A train 125 yards long traveling at 40 miles per hour enters a long tunnel. Just as the last car is completely inside the tunnel, a man begins walking from the end of the train to the front. He walks at 5 miles per hour and reaches the front of the train just as it emerges from the tunnel into daylight. How long is the tunnel?

Answer:

The tunnel is 1,125 yards long. If x = the length of the tunnel, the man walks x yards at 45 miles per hour (the combined speed of the train and his walking). He walks this distance in the same time the train travels x - 125 yards at 40 miles per hour. Using the D = RT formula, since T is the same, x/45 = (x - 125) /40. This equation solves to x = 1,125.

Answer:

Put the pie in the oven and start both timers. When the first one runs out, turn it over. (Elapsed time so far is 4 minutes.) When the seven-minute timer runs out, turn it over too. When the first timer runs out again (after a total of 8 minutes), the seven-minute timer has been running for one minute since it was re-started. Turn it over again. So, on a windless day, he can cycle 7/3 miles in 8 minutes, or 8 divided by 7/3, one mile in 3 3/7 minutes.
